The Hare with Amber Eyes

Edmund de Waal

27th June, St. Mary's Church

264 wood and ivory carvings of animals, plants and people - none of them larger than a matchbox: apprentice potter Edmund de Waal was entranced by the collection when he first encountered it in the Tokyo apartment of his Great Uncle Iggie.

Later, when Edmund inherited the 'netsuke', they unlocked a story far more intriguing than he ever could have imagined.

Edmund has travelled the world to stand in great buildings his forbears once inhabited and traces the lines of a remarkable family history against the backdrop of a tumultuous century. Now an internationally celebrated potter, Edmund de Waal's porcelain is in 30 international museum collections - most recently he created installations for the V & A and Tate Britian.

Winner of the 2011 Costa Biography Award, he has distinguished himself not only as a potter but as a writer of rare talent and sensitivity.
